DERRY -- A Methuen man battled a New Hampshire state trooper who tried to arrest him for drunken driving after stopping him on Interstate 93 early today, police said.
Trooper A. P. Monaco was patrolling I-93 in the Derry area about 2:15 a.m. when he spotted a Ford Explorer being driven erratically and pulled it over south of Exit 4 in Windham.
The driver of the car was identified as Scott M. Bennett, 38, of Methuen.
Monaco said he determined Bennett was intoxicated and attempted to arrest him. Bennett began fighting with him, but "Monaco was able to defeat Bennett and ultimately handcuff him," a state police press release said.
Bennett continued to resist arrest and had to be forced into Monaco's cruiser, police said.
Bennett was booked at the state police barracks in Bedford on charges of assault on a police officer, driving under the influence of alcohol and resisting arrest.
He was later released on bail pending an appearance in Derry Circuit Court on April 26.
