---- — PLAISTOW — Employees at seven restaurants and stores have been charged with selling alcohol to a minor after a sting operation visited 15 stores Thursday night.

In the sting, police used a 20-year-old man who entered the stores and attempted to buy alcohol. He was successful at the following locations, according to police:

2 Sisters Sports Bar, 20 Plaistow Road.

Corner Pocket, 181 Plaistow Road;

Irving Gas, 93 Plaistow Road;

Northland Variety, 134 Newton Road;

Plaistow Pizza Company, 181 Plaistow Road;

Shaw’s Supermarket, 4 Plaistow Road;

Signal Variety, 63 Plaistow Road;

Employees at the seven locations responsible for selling alcohol to the 20-year-old are charged with prohibited sales, a class B misdemeanor punishable by up to a $1,200 fine, according to Deputy Chief Kathleen Jones.

In at least one of the instances, the man tried buying alcohol and was asked to show his ID, at which time he did and was given the alcohol anyway, Jones said.

Police also visited the following eight locations, all of whom did not sell alcohol to the minor: Cumberland Farms, The Dugout Grille, Foods Plus Hawaiian Isle Restaurant, Mini Express Convenience Store, Nouria Energy Store, Plaistow Quick Mart and Sushi Time.

In New Hampshire, employees at businesses licensed to sell alcohol are required to ask anybody appearing to be the age of 30 or under for a form of identification, Jones said.

The police department does this sort of sting occasionally to keep businesses on their toes and ensure that employees are receiving the proper training in how to handle and sell alcohol, according to Jones.

Generally, they average four to six illegal sales, but having seven in one night is not a cause for concern, Jones said.

Either way, it’s something that’s worth keeping up on, she said.

“We’re going to continue with these checks. We don’t want to see under-aged people out there drinking or drinking and driving,” Jones said.
