DERRY — Nearly three weeks after a gas grill was stolen off the porch at Finders Keepers, police yesterday arrested Ruben Pabon, 41, of Derry.
It was a theft that generated outrage, not because a used grill was taken from a charitable operation so much as who participated. Surveillance video clearly showed an adult male, accompanied by a boy about 10 years old, carting the grill off the store’s porch.
“It was enough they were stealing items that were intended to help other people,” store owner Laura Barker said at the time. “But to see a child assisting was horrible. It was just like adding insult to injury.”
A few days after the theft, police said they had identified the suspect, whose face was clearly visible on the surveillance tape, but were waiting to make an arrest.
Pabon was arrested just past 2 p.m. yesterday and charged with theft, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and endangering the welfare of a child.
He was later released on $1,500 personal recognizance. He is scheduled to appear in 10th Circuit Court in Derry June 6.
The grill Pabon is accused of stealing was worth about $400 new, but was being sold at the Crystal Avenue store for $75. Police did recover the grill.
Finders Keepers, which opened last summer, donates its proceeds to charities serving children an military personnel serving overseas.
