Piano teacher charged with sex assault

ATKINSON — A 74-year-old piano teacher is charged with aggravated felonious sexual assault and more charges could be coming.

The victim, who was 11 years old when the abuse allegedly started in 2002, was a piano student, police Chief Al Brackett said.

John Goodwin was arrested at his home on Academy Avenue yesterday morning, the same address from which he operates his business, Goodwin Music Academy.

Goodwin is free on $50,000 personal recognizance pending a court appearance March 17 in 10th Circuit Court.

The male victim came forward about three months ago, Brackett said, at which time Atkinson police and the Rockingham County Attorney’s Office launched an investigation.

Goodwin allegedly assaulted the boy between May 2002 and October 2005, although he only faces a single charge at this time.

But, Brackett said, more charges may be forthcoming. He said the investigation continues.

It’s possible, he said, that more victims could come forward.

“We really don’t know, that’s why we’re asking,” Brackett said yesterday. “It’s something we’re looking into.”

Anyone with information about this investigation is asked to call Atkinson police at 363-4001.
