Staples collects school supplies through Sept. 18

SALEM — DoSomething.org and Staples teamed up with actress and screenwriter Nikki Reed for the third annual National Staples/Do Something 101 School Supply Drive.

As part of dosomething101.org, Reed is encouraging area teens to make a difference by collecting school supplies and dropping them off at their local Staples through Sept. 18. Staples customers can get involved by donating $1 at any Staples with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting Salem-area students in need.

All school supplies and donations will be given locally to the following charities to ensure they get into the hands of disadvantaged youth just in time for the new school year, including the Salem Boys & Girls Club and the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Derry.

The local Staples stores for supply drop-off are at 176 S. Broadway in Salem, 41 Nashua Road in Londonderry and 58 Plaistow Road in Plaistow.

Staples also is donating more than $125,000 worth of school supplies to the program.

Bag books at Derry library sale

DERRY — Friends of the Derry Libraries will host the September book sale on Derryfest Saturday, Sept. 18, at Derry Public Library on East Broadway from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Inside the library, hardcover books are $1 and paperbacks are 50 cents. In addition, a huge selection of books will be sold in the park at $2 a bag until noon and $1 a bag after noon.

Teen Anime Club meets in Derry Sept. 14

DERRY — Fans of Japanese animation and manga in grades six through 12 are invited to attend the Anime Club's first fall meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 14.

This meeting for teens is from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Derry Public Library. Discuss your favorite series, practice and display your artwork, and meet other fans.

Walk to benefit Make-A-Wish

CHESTER — The fifth annual Sam's Walk for Dreams to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of New Hampshire will take place Sunday, Sept. 26, at the Wason Pond Recreation Facility on Raymond Road.

The event will raise money for kids in need, with a goal of $100,000.

The organization also is organizing haircut-a-thons, raffling baskets, and hosting booths at Chester's town fair.

    HAMPSTEAD - Selectman Sean Murphy told the crowd at last night's deliberative session that he changed his mind about the $1.53 million warrant article to build a new police station.
    Murphy voted not to recommend the plan to build a 7,600-square-foot, one-story facility on Veterans Way in January. But he told more than 50 people at last night's meeting he now feels differently.
