Newton couple charged with abusing baby

Month-old child had several broken bones

NEWTON — A local couple faces felony charges for allegedly abusing their 1-month-old child, leaving the infant with several broken bones.

Christine Tumulty, 34, and Allen Rockwood, 32, of 76 S. Main St. were arrested Wednesday night on second-degree assault charges, according to police Chief Lawrence Streeter.

Rockwood, who faces two assault counts, also was charged with endangering the welfare of a child following a lengthy investigation, Streeter said.

Rockwood was arraigned in 10th Circuit Court in Plaistow and ordered held on $250,000 cash bail at the county jail, where he remained incarcerated last night.

Police received a report of potential abuse Oct. 21 from the New Hampshire Division of Children, Youth and Families, Streeter said.

The child, whose name and sex are not being released, had several broken bones in various stages of healing, Streeter said. It’s believed the injuries occurred over a monthlong period, he said.

“It was a complicated investigation,” Streeter said. “When a baby has been abused, you have to prove where (the injuries) came from.”

The child remains in state custody. Streeter said he couldn’t comment on the specifics of the investigation.

Tumulty, who faces a single second-degree assault count, was released on cash bail Wednesday night, Streeter said. Tumulty and Rockwood were arrested by Officer Robert DiFlumeri, who received assistance in the investigation from Officer Leanne Wancheck, he said.

Streeter said his department has dealt with the couple in the past, but could not say if they were arrested previously by Newton police.

Records show that Tumulty was arrested by Newton police on a warrant June 18 and charged with hindering apprehension or prosecution. No further details were available.

The case has been forwarded to the Rockingham County attorney’s office for possible indictment by a grand jury. Streeter said the couple could face additional charges.
