Driver dies in I-93 crash in Windham

WINDHAM — A driver transporting roofing shingles in his 2004 gold Jeep Liberty died in an accident on Interstate 93 North last night after losing control of his vehicle and crashing into a guard rail.

State Police said Donald Galligan, 54, of Weare, N.H., was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred shortly after 7 p.m. about one mile north of Exit 3. Police said Galligan wasn’t wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the demolished vehicle.

“The preliminary investigation indicates that a male driver could not maintain control of his vehicle due to the fact that it was overloaded with roofing shingles,” State Police said in a press release about the crash.

“As a result his vehicle crashed into the left side guardrail, veered to the right across both lanes of travel, then veered back to the left crashing into the left side guardrail again at which time the operator was ejected from the vehicle.”

Troopers from New Hampshire State Police, Troop B and emergency crews from the Windham Fire Department responded to the crash in the area of the Windham scales.

Both of the I-93 Northbound lanes were closed and traffic was directed through the northbound scales for about three hours while the scene was cleared. Anyone with information about this accident is asked to call Trooper James Powers at NH State Police Troop-B at 603-223-4381.
