---- — SALEM — Rep. Gary Azarian’s House seat will remain vacant until the November election.
Town Manager Keith Hickey told selectmen Monday there would not be enough time to hold a special election to find a replacement for Azarian, who resigned last week.
The two-term lawmaker was one of nine House members who represented Salem in the Legislature.
Azarian, 53, said he would have to step down because of business and family obligations.
He filed to run for one of two Salem selectmen seats but withdrew his name Thursday — the day before the filing period closed.
Azarian was a leading advocate of expanded gambling legislation in the House and plans to establish a casino at Rockingham Park.
