Cops for Kids with Cancer support local girl

SALEM — Five-year-old Ava Doiron-Frankland, who’s battling brain cancer, came to the police station yesterday straight from her first radiation treatment.

She was there to receive gifts and a donation from Cops for Kids with Cancer.

Police Detective Sgt. Thomas Kench and his wife Maria, who have a daughter in Ava’s class, are running the Boston Marathon next month to support the cause.

“We nominated Ava to be eligible to receive funds and she was approved,” Thomas Kench said yesterday.

A fundraiser was held at the Black Water Grill Saturday night and 36 members of the Salem Police Department are now growing beards — for a fee — to raise more money. The department relaxed its facial hair policy for the month, Deputy police Chief Shawn Patten said, and officers paid $25 each for the right to stop shaving. The effort has raised about $900.
