Race promotes history center, development

LAWRENCE — The Lawrence History Center is hosting a road race May 18, in the North Canal district to raise awareness about the center and to promote fitness, economic and cultural development in the city.

Start time is 9 a.m. at the Everett Mills Complex, 15 Union St.

The proposed route highlights many of the revitalization efforts in the city’s parks and historic mill buildings, and will utilize local vendors whenever feasible in all aspects of the event production and promotion. The date was selected to coincide with Ralph Fasanella Day, honoring the artist whose well-known paintings of The Great Strike honor the role of Lawrence in the labor movement.

The event includes a 5K run and walk as well as a Kids Canal Dash for ages 12 and younger.

Registration is $25 in advanced per person for 5k run and $1 for the Kid’s Canal Dash, or $30 for 5k Run and Walk on race day.

‘Black Gold’ available at compost site

ANDOVER — The town’s Bald Hill Compost Site, located on High Plain Road, is set to open to residents for the season on Saturday, April 12. Annual stickers are $25.

The site contains rich compost, dubbed “black gold” by some users, for use on lawns and gardens. Up to two barrels can be taken per day. Officials say many lawn and garden shops charge $35 for comparable compost.

Residents can also drop off their leaves and grass clippings at the site, either dumping them in barrels or disposing of them in paper compost bags available at hardware stores.

Curbside pickup of leaves and clippings is still available in town during certain weeks of spring and fall, but the Bald Hill site accepts materials all summer and fall through the end of November. Friendly volunteers monitor the site, and no commercial dumping is allowed.

The site is open 22 hours a week. Operating hours have recently changed. They are Wednesdays and Fridays from noon to 3 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
