Crews resumed work yesterday on the $2.79M Pelham roundabouts

Drivers may want to go around the roundabouts

---- — PELHAM — Crews restarted work yesterday on the $2.79 million twin roundabouts project in the town center.

“All eyes are on it,” said Brian Wilmot, contract administrator for the state Department of Transportation. “We’re trying to get it done as soon as possible.”

The project is on schedule for completion this year. That should be sometime this summer, he said.

Police issued an alert to drivers that work is resuming.

“Expect traffic delays through the center of town,” police said. “Please seek alternate routes if possible.”

Continental Paving of Londonderry is building the twin roundabouts on Route 111A.

Last year’s work focused on the roundabout by the Village Green.

This year’s work will be around the second roundabout at the intersection of Main Street and Nashua Road.

“We’re here early to get it done as soon as possible for everyone’s sake,” Wilmot said.

He encourages drivers to pay attention to signs and watch for construction crews.

Work may also force changes in the road alignment over the spring and summer.

“Changing traffic patterns could be expected,” he said.

Although traffic may be slow at times, it’s expected to keep moving through the town center.

“We don’t have any detours set up,” Wilmot said.

The roundabouts are intended to help relieve traffic congestion during commuting hours and when school lets out.

It’s a heavily traveled area.

Besides serving as a crossroads for the community, the area is home to Town Hall, three public schools, the fire and police stations, the library, two churches and a parochial school.

Town officials view the roundabouts as another step in the creation of a vibrant town center.

A new $3.9 million fire station opened last year by the village green. Voters, meanwhile, at Town Meeting earlier this month, approved a $22.6 million high school expansion and renovation.

They also approved a mixed use zoning district designed to encourage development of small business and residential uses in the years to come.
