Salem suspect unhappy with $1.5M bail

Man faces 17 charges after police chase

SALEM — A Salem man, jailed on 17 charges, protested yesterday after learning he would be held on $1.5 million cash bail following a police pursuit Friday.

Luis Figueroa, 30, of 7 Tiffany Road, Apt. 12, was arraigned in 10th Circuit Court. His bail set by Judge Robert Stephen at the request of Salem police prosecutor Jason Grosky.

Figueroa, found passed out in his Mercedes, is charged with leading police on a chase that led to two officers being sent to the hospital and three cruisers damaged.

Grosky wanted Figueroa held on $1.5 million cash bill because of his lengthy criminal history and the risk that he could flee if he posted a lower bail.

“I think a very significant cash bail is warranted,” Grosky said. “Beyond a danger to the community, he poses a serious flight risk.”

Figueroa, arraigned by video from the Rockingham County jail, listened quietly, then yawned as Grosky spoke to the judge. When Figueroa heard the bail request, he was visibly upset.

“I want to say $1.5 million is ridiculous,” Figueroa said.

Figueroa said he’s the father of a 2-year-old son and would not flee.

“There is no way I can run; they are going to catch me, no matter what. $1.5 million? That’s insane,” he said.

Grosky disagreed.

He described the police pursuit, which began at about 9:45 p.m. after police received a call that a white Mercedes was all over Rockingham Park Boulevard and cut off the caller three times.

Salem police Officer Michael McCarthy stopped the car in the Salem Crossing condominium complex and found Figueroa passed out in the front seat. His foot was on the brake and the car was in drive, police Lt. Joel Dolan said.

Figueroa then woke up and hit the accelerator, speeding off and striking several parked cars. He also tried to hit police officers and damaged three cruisers, plowing over a snowbank while trying to escape.
