---- — PELHAM — A Lowell man is facing a DWI charge after a traffic accident was caught on videotape by a patrolman forced to avoid the crash.
Police said Officer Brian Barbato took evasive action as the crash happened in front of him on Route 38 Tuesday night.
Stephen Swett, 32, was charged with DWI, crossing a yellow line and having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle.
Swett was released on $1,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in 10th Circuit Court in Salem on April 8.
Barbato was on patrol about 9:15 p.m. Tuesday when the accident happened near the Hammar Sign Company.
Police posted the onboard cruiser video to YouTube: http://youtu.be/oyBeHq5Ewoo.
The video appears to show the Volkswagen Passat driven by Swett crossing the center line and colliding with a Nissan Maxima driven by Sheila Borrero, 18, of Lowell. Swett did not stop until Barbato pursued him.
Barbato drove to the right as debris crossed his path. He reversed direction and followed Swett’s vehicle.
Police said Borerro and her passenger, Christina Borrero, 19, of Lowell, were not hurt.
Swett suffered minor injuries, police said, but refused treatment.
