Derry plans substance abuse forum

---- — DERRY — Pinkerton Academy, the Greater Derry Public Health Network and Community Partners will host an informational forum on substance misuse at Stockbridge Theatre Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 6 p.m.

“Substance Misuse in Our Communities: What do you Know?” will include specialists and professionals, including state officials, health professionals, law enforcement, mental health professionals, representatives from diversion programs and other community organizations.

The program will provide an interactive informational forum for parents, students, staff and the community at large. It will be an opportunity to learn about this growing problem, preventative measures and a chance to have questions answered.

The forum will address many topics.

For parents and community members, do you know:

What current trends are with drug use in the community?

What the signs and symptoms are for drug use?

What to do if you suspect drug use?

What the legal consequences are if alcohol or other drugs are used by teens in your home?

How often drinking arrests are made in the community?

How often thefts related to prescription drug abuse occur?

Teens, do you know:

The health consequences of synthetic drugs, prescription drugs, marijuana or heroin?

The legal consequences if you are found to have an illegal substance in your possession?

The legal consequences if a friend is caught possessing an illegal drug in your car without your knowledge?

The consequences if you mix alcohol or other drugs with your prescribed or over-the-counter medication?

Where to go if you need help for substance abuse?

The panel of experts will include: Timothy Rourke, Governor’s Commission on Substance Abuse; Jim Reams, Rockingham County Attorney; Lisa Mure, Community Health Institute; Captain Vern Thomas, Derry Police Department; Dr. Thomas Scott, Parkland Medical Center; Deanna Barreiro, Parkland Emergency Department; Dr. Louise Morin-Davy, Center for Life Management; Jessica Beaudoin, Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor, Center for Life Management; Kimberly Bavaro, Juvenile Diversion Program-The Upper Room. Following the presentation, professionals will be on hand to address questions and concerns.
