Night work scheduled on I-93

---- — SALEM — Temporary realignment of Interstate 93 southbound near Exit 2 is scheduled for tomorrow night, weather permitting, according to the New Hampshire Department of Transportation.

The work will take place during non-commuter hours, from approximately 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Upon completion of the pavement striping operation, southbound traffic will be realigned to use the new temporary bridge. Motorists utilizing the Exit 2 southbound off-ramp will also have a new off-ramp location further to the north of the existing location.

Construction operations will require traffic on I-93 southbound to be reduced to one lane. Motorists should remain alert while traveling through the construction zone and obey all posted signs.

This work is part of the $41 million I-93 widening and reconstruction project in the vicinity of Exit 2. The general contractor is George R. Cairns & Sons Inc. of Windham.

New charter school hosts open house

DERRY — Granite State Arts Academy, a charter high school to open in September 2014, will hold an open house on Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. at its tentative location at 16 Route 111, Building 4.

The public, interested families, community leaders, artists, educators, business professionals and volunteers are invited to attend to learn more about the school and ask questions. Children are welcome. The program will consist of an informal presentation and tour of the facility. Light refreshments and snacks will be served.

The arts-based school will serve grades 9-12 and offer rigorous core academics, as well as intensive studies in four areas of art: dance, music (including voice), theater, and visual arts. Granite State Arts Academy plans to open with all four grades, capping enrollment at 40 pupils per grade.

Chicken pot pie is on the menu

SALEM — The 2014 Honduran Mission team will be sponsoring a chicken pot pie supper on Saturday at 5 p.m. in the Mary Queen of Peace Hall, 200 Lawrence Road, to help raise money for the next trip in February.

Here is the full menu: chicken pie, mashed potatoes, green beans, stuffing, cranberry sauce, rolls and dessert. There will be homemade apple pie and cobbler for dessert.

Tickets will be sold at the door the night of the supper.

Join the Horribles Parade in Pelham

PELHAM — The Spooktacular Horribles Parade will be at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Village Green.

Goblins, ghosts and ghouls are invited to march. There will be a haunted hayride, front-end loader filled with candy, apple cider, hot cocoa, baked goods and Halloween music.

The event is organized by the Pelham Firefighters Association and Pelham Firefighters IAFF Local 4546.

Residents, get ridof hazardous waste

ATKINSON — Residents of Plaistow, Atkinson, Danville, Kingston, Chester and Hampstead can bring their household hazardous waste to the Atkinson Municipal Household Hazardous Waste Collection on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at Pope Field.

Residents of the approved towns can drop anything off from a number of categories, including aerosol cans, gasoline and oil mixtures, oil-based paints, antifreeze, fungicides and herbicides, gun-cleaning solvents and much more.

Radioactive, explosives, biological, infectious, fire extinguishers, medical wastes, ammunition and latex paint will not be accepted.

Pope Field is located at 71 Woodlock Park Lane.

Halloween party slated at Salem mall

SALEM — The Mall at Rockingham Park will host a Halloween party for children Saturday.

The Kidgits Boo Bash is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the second floor near Lord & Taylor. Children are encouraged to come in costume.

Newton Scouts collect for food drive

NEWTON — Cub Scout Pack 91 will conduct a food drive this Saturday and Saturday, Nov. 2.

The Scouts will leave notices of the food drive at all Newton homes Oct. 26 and return to collect the nonperishable foods and canned goods Nov. 2. They will be donated to the Newton Food Pantry

Donations should be left in a bag or box near mailboxes by 9 a.m.

Salem High marches in band show

SALEM — The Salem High School marching band will be one of nine bands to participate in the Maine Band Directors Association Marching Band Show in Portsmouth on Saturday.

The show begins at 6 p.m. at Portsmouth High School, 50 Andrew Jarvis Drive. The bands, from both New Hampshire and Maine, seek five-star ratings in nine performance categories, including ensemble music, color guard and percussion.

Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and children under 12. Tickets are available at the gate.
