NEWTON — Get ready to “Dig into Reading” this summer at Gale Library.
The free summer reading program has something for all from preschoolers to adults with reading clubs, story hours, programs and activities, and prizes galore.
Start your fun today by registering for the Reading Club. There’s a club for children, “Dig into Reading, Read”; one for teens, “Beneath the Surface;” and one for adults, “Groundbreaking Reads.”
Meet the goal, enter drawings and get many rewards and prizes — books, ice cream, pizza, passes. The first 50 children to sign up receive vouchers for Portland Sea Dog tickets and book bags.
Activities and programs begin on June 24 with Compost Cupcakes. They have mud frosting, cookie dirt, jimmie rocks and gummy worms. On June 26, at 6:30 p.m. Mad Science will kick off summer activities with their fun-filled Dig Into Science show.
Dig into Science is designed to get kids excited about the science that happens underneath the ground. The science of “digging deep” is presented with topics such as Earth’s layers, stalactites and stalagmites, soggy soil, underground creatures, tectonic plates and earthquakes, and volcanoes. Dig into Science will entertain and educate. Head to Town Hall; it’s open to all ages and free.
Each Saturday, drop in for simple, quick crafts. On June 30, make something red, white and blue for the Fourth of July, and get a pair of hologram glasses to watch the fireworks.
Friday Flicks are back with “How To Eat Fried Worms“ on June 28 at 2 p.m. It’s air conditioned, has a big screen and popcorn is provided.
On Monday, July 1, at 6:30 p.m., take an ordinary rock and make it into a pet or friend. This pet doesn’t take make a mess or fuss.
The Museum of Science will visit Newton again with its program, Dig into Dinosaurs on Wednesday, July 10, at 2 p.m. Sign-up by a parent is necessary for this program as there are only 25 seats available for children ages 4 to 8.
