---- — PLAISTOW — Tips from the public helped police capture a man suspected of stealing baby formula from Shaw’s Supermarket.

Deputy Chief Kathleen Jones said yesterday that police caught the man after receiving phone calls and emails from people who saw the suspect’s photograph Monday in The Eagle-Tribune.

The store surveillance photo showed a man with short dark hair and a tattoo on his left arm.

It turned out to be Benjamin Guarini, 31, of Methuen, who was wanted on a warrant by Plaistow police. He was arrested on a single felony theft charge and additional theft charges are pending, Jones said.

Further details on those charges and Guarini’s past were not available yesterday.

“Our department is very grateful to the citizens who helped us identify Guarini,” Jones said. “The public is a great resource for law enforcement, and we appreciate their willingness to get involved to help us solve this.”

She thanked the public, the newspaper and area law enforcement agencies who helped with the case. They are the Methuen, Lawrence and Salem, N.H., police departments and the Essex County House of Correction in Middleton.

Anyone with additional information is asked to call Plaistow police at 603-382-1200 or to email Officer Dorothy McGurren at dmcgurren@plaistow.com.
