PORTSMOUTH — Searchers failed to find a man who jumped into the Piscataqua River from the Interstate 95 bridge here about 5 p.m. yesterday.
New Hampshire State Police responded to a call for a man on a bicycle looking over the bridge railing, but the man jumped as the police units arrived on the scene, according to a press release. It is unclear why the male subject jumped off the bridge, the state police statement said.
A search that included units from NH State Police and Marine Patrol, U.S. Coast Guard, Maine State Police and the Portsmouth Police Department failed to turn up the man in the swift-flowing section of the river between New Hampshire and Maine.
The Portsmouth Herald reported the Coast Guard called off the search shortly after 7 p.m.
The case remains under investigation by State Police.
