Salem crash leaves man unconscious

SALEM — A single-car crash last night on Interstate 93 south left a Londonderry man unconscious after the vehicle skidded off the highway into trees.

The accident occurred about 8:15 p.m. between Exit 1 and the Massachusetts border, trapping the driver and closing the right lane for a brief period as emergency crews responded.

Mark Cornetta, whose age was not available, was found unresponsive inside the car. He had to be extricated through the passenger's side door, according to Salem fire Capt. Warren Seckendorf. There was no one else in the car.

Cornetta was taken by ambulance to Lawrence General Hospital, Seckendorf said. He then was flown by medical helicopter to a Boston hospital, state police said.

Witnesses told state police that Cornetta was driving erratically and at high speed when the accident occurred. The crash is still being investigated by state Trooper William Bright. No further details were available earlier today.
