---- — WINDHAM — Selectmen’s Chairman Bruce Breton is recovering from an illness and expects to be out of the hospital in a couple of weeks.

“I will probably be out of intensive care on the weekend,” Breton said in a brief phone call Friday from Parkland Medical Center in Derry.

Breton, before becoming ill last week, had been talking about a weekend getaway with his wife, Marcia Dipaolo.

“I wanted a getaway, but I didn’t want to go to scenic Parkland Medical Center,” Breton said.

His health has forced him out of a run for re-election. His friend, businessman Al Letizio Jr., is running in his place. The filing period continues through Friday.

Breton hopes to return for a selectmen’s meeting before the end of his term in March, if his health permits.

He was eager to get well to tend to his new duties as chairman of the Republican town committee. Breton said he is looking forward to the coming election cycles.

He said he had been receiving calls, messages and visits from friends, including some political aspirants with their eyes on high political office. Breton would not disclose the identities of the political hopefuls.

The selectman was keeping busy reading the newspapers.

“My mind is sharp,” he said.

Breton was admitted to Parkland on Jan. 17. His wife said last week he was fighting an infection.

At one point, the hospital restricted visitors to protect his health.

“I had a good checkup this morning,” Breton said. “I expect to be out of here in a couple of weeks.”

Breton is involved in harness racing and looking forward to his annual trip to Maine for the Bangor State Fair races this summer.
