Fire causes heavy damage to Plaistow home

PLAISTOW — Firefighters from several towns are still fighting a house fire at 106 Willard Way two hours after it broke out at about 9 a.m.

Homeowner John O'Connor said he awoke to the sound of a smoke detector going off. He left his bedroom and walked into the living room, where he found curtains on fire, he said.

He and his dog, the only ones home at the time, escaped and ran to a neighbor's home, where O'Connor borrowed boots and clothes.

Neither O'Connor nor the dog were injured. His wife and college-age son were not home at the time, he said.

O'Connor said he has lived there for 18 years.

Neighbors lined the street in the residential neighborhood and watched firefighters continue to battle the very smoky blaze.

The house has sustained significant damage.

O'Connor said he didn't yet know what started the blaze.

An attached garage on one side of the house appears intact.

It is still an active fire scene. Firefighters from Plaistow, Hampstead and Salem contoinue to battle the stubborn blaze. Firefighters from other communities are providing station coverage.
