ATKINSON — Atkinson Recreation is now accepting application for all positions: director, assistant directors, counselors, and counselors in training for the Sun N Fun program for 2013. Returning staff members also need to apply every year.
The program runs for six weeks, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily. It starts the end of June and continue to the beginning of August. The specific dates should be available sometime by the end of March.
The program needs energetic individuals who like to play with children. The director is responsible for overseeing the entire program. The director will plan and manage the daily activities and field trips. That person also is responsible for making decision with the recreation director for camp cancellation due to weather.
The assistant director reports to the director, oversees the activities, and works very closely with the children and the counselors. One assistant director’s responsibility is to plan and manage with the director the daily activities for campers in kindergarten to fifth grade.
The other assistant director is responsible for the middle-school-age campers (going into sixth, seventh and eighth grades in fall 2013) for their special program. That person will plan and manage the activities and the field trips for just the middle school campers.
These three positions are very hands on. Candidates also need some secretarial organization skills such as keeping track of registrations, daily attendance, trip permission slips and collecting field trip money.
The counselors are responsible for playing with the children in the safe environment. They will go from playing soccer, basketball, and playground to arts and crafts. They must communicate with campers’ parents and guardians.
All the counselors are responsible for running all activities and keeping attendance hourly. All the counselors have to be 16 years old when the employment starts.
The director’s position is 40 hours per week. Assistant directors and counselors daily work hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Counselors in training are not paid positions. CITs will be assigned to work with one of the counselors to work with campers on a daily basis. CITs have to be 14 years old.
The director is required to work an extra week, including sign-up day and a one-day training session (dates will be available later) for planning and preparation. The assistant directors and counselors are also required to be at sign-up day and a training session.
Application forms are available at Town Hall in the selectmen’s office between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, or download one at town-atkinsonnh.com.
