Bicycle bank robber still at large

NEWTON, N.H. — Police are still looking for a man on a bicycle who robbed Merrimac Savings Bank on Thursday.

Police Chief Lawrence Streeter said yesterday the robber, believed to be about 5-foot-8 with a thin build, remained at large after fleeing the South Main Street bank on his bicycle with an undetermined amount of cash in an envelope.

Police released bank surveillance footage and a composite of the suspect, hoping to receive tips from the public.

“We have received some calls,” Streeter said but was unable to comment further.

He did say that neither the green mountain bike nor the envelope of money has been recovered.

The robbery occurred shortly before 9:30 a.m. when the man, with a red New England Patriots cap pulled down over his face, approached one of three employees in the bank and passed a note demanding money.

Streeter’s wife, Cindy Streeter, was one of the three employees. She quickly called her husband on his cellphone after the robber fled. There were no customers inside the bank. The robber did not brandish a gun or threaten anyone, the police chief said.

The bank robbery drew officers from the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office, New Hampshire State Police and several local police departments, including Kingston, East Kingston and Plaistow.
