Man arraigned after Salem police pursuit

SALEM — A Rochester man was ordered held on $250,000 cash bail yesterday following an incident that injured a police officer and damaged police cruisers.

Anthony Monbleau, 23, was arraigned by video from the Rockingham County jail in connection with a police pursuit Saturday night.

He faces eight charges, including several felonies, for leading police on a chase in a stolen vehicle down several busy streets, Salem Deputy police Chief Shawn Patten said.

While Monbleau was pursued by police, he was apparently injecting himself with heroin, Salem police prosecutor Jason Grosky said.

Grosky asked Judge John Korbey to set Monbleau’s bail at $250,000 cash during his arraignment in 10th Circuit Court. He was initially held on $75,000 cash bail, pending his arraignment.

Korbey agreed to raise Monbleau’s bail to $250,000 cash or corporate surety.

“Just looking at the charges, he clearly is a significant risk to himself,” Grosky said after the arraignment. “More important than that, he is a risk to everyone else.”

Monbleau was heading north on Route 28 at about 6 p.m. Saturday when he refused to stop for Officer Eric O’Brien, who was pulling him over for a motor vehicle infraction.

O’Brien began pursuing the Isuzu Rodeo that Monbleau was driving at a low speed. O’Brien then learned the vehicle had been stolen from the Heav’nly Donuts parking lot at 134 N. Broadway, according to a police affidavit.

Officer Justin Bagley joined the pursuit, which they broke off because Monbleau was driving too recklessly, Patten said.

At one point, the two officers had Monbleau stopped at gunpoint at the end of Gordon Avenue, but he sped up and drove away, the affidavit said.

The vehicle was latter spotted driving erratically on North Policy Street, forcing cars off the road, Patten said.

When an officer tried to put out stop sticks, the driver swerved toward him, forcing the officer to jump out of the way, Patten said.
