Father, son charged in Salem store thefts

SALEM, N.H. — A father and his 15-year-old son were charged with stealing several hundred dollars worth of merchandise from a local Kmart.

Marco Rodriguez-Diaz, 35, of Lawrence was pulled over and arrested Saturday on Route 28 after he and his son fled from Kmart at 161 S. Broadway about 5:20 p.m., police said.

Police recovered two jackets, two digital cameras and four video games, Capt. Shawn Patten said. Rodriguez-Diaz and his son, who was not identified because he is a juvenile, stuffed merchandise beneath the coats they were wearing, police said.

"They put the jackets on underneath jackets they wore in the store and hid the games on them," Patten said.

Detective Juan Valerio and Officer Chad Clark spotted Rodriguez-Diaz as he was driving south on Route 28. Police pulled him over near The Home Depot.

Rodriguez-Diaz is charged with shoplifting and disobeying a police officer. He was released on $1,000 bail.

His son was charged with shoplifting. After the boy's arrest, he was released to the custody of his mother.
