---- — DERRY — Two young children are safe following a police search off Gulf Road yesterday afternoon.
The children, a 9-year-old boy and an 8-year-old girl, were found in woods behind a local home, according to Derry police Sgt. Frank Stoncius. They were unharmed and had just wandered off for a while, he said.
The youngsters were reported missing by a relative about 3:25 p.m., prompting local police to organize a search for the pair as it began to get dark and a major snowstorm approached. The search lasted for approximately an hour.
“There was concern on our part with the darkness and the upcoming weather,” Stoncius said.
The children were found not far from the home just as a New Hampshire State Police K9 unit arrived to help track them, Stoncius said. State police referred all questions about the search to Derry police. The children’s names were not available.
Several police officers remained at the Gulf Road home until about 5 p.m.
A woman at the home declined to comment on the incident, but she did say the children were found.
“Everyone is OK,” she said. “They are home safe.”
