Fire Department offers holiday safety tips
WINDHAM – The Windham Fire Department is offering safety tips for the holiday season.
”As everyone gets busier during the holidays, we often become rushed, distracted or tired,” fire Chief Tom McPherson said. “That’s when home fires are more likely to occur.”
The department recommends people watch the stove when cooking and create a “kid-free zone” at least three feet from the stove. Keep candles at least a foot away from things that can burn or consider flameless candles. Blow them out when you leave or go to bed.
Make sure artificial trees are labeled fire-retardant. Be sure to water real trees daily, keep them from blocking exits, place them three feet from heat sources.
Use lights labeled by an independent testing laboratory and replace worn or broken cords. Turn them off before leaving or going to bed. Get rid of trees right after Christmas.
Holiday concert to feature flutes
HAMPSTEAD — The Friends of Hampstead Public Library will hold its holiday concert program featuring the Windham Flute Ensemble on Tuesday, Dec. 11, at 7 p.m.
The group of nine flutists was founded in 1998 with only four members. They perform a variety of music, including light classic “pops” tunes and holiday favorites.
The ensemble has performed at many different locations and events, including the Adams Memorial Opera House, many indoor and outdoor events in Windham, Derry Fest, Northeast Rehab Hospital, area libraries, and several senior and nursing homes.
The program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will follow the performance, and members of the Friends are asked to stay afterward for the regular monthly meeting of the organization.
