Two face charges of endangering unborn child; Police say man injected woman with heroin

HAMPSTEAD - Two local residents now face charges of endangering the life of an unborn child through heroin injection.

Albert Frost, 28, was arrested last week and charged with injecting Nina Doane with heroin, endangering her unborn child. Doane is at least 20 weeks pregnant, according to court records.

Doane, 22, was charged on Nov. 7 with the same crime, endangering a child by injecting herself with heroin while pregnant. Police have refused to provide any further details about the incident.

Frost and Doane live at 52 Village Green Road, Building H, Apartment 7.

Hampstead police Detective Sgt. Ken Owen said Frost was arrested on Nov. 29 at Plaistow District Court when he appeared for a probable cause hearing on an earlier burglary charge. He was originally arrested on Oct. 27 during a routine motor vehicle stop when police discovered there were warrants out for him. Subsequently, police uncovered evidence linking him to an Oct. 18 robbery at 4 Hickory Road.

Frost was released on $2,500 personal recognizance bail. He is scheduled to appear in Plaistow District Court at 8 a.m. on Jan. 21.

Doane is free on $1,000 bail. She is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 17. If convicted, she faces up to a year in jail with court-ordered counseling and up to a $2,000 fine. The state Department of Health and Human Services could also step in once the child is born and file court action to take custody away from Doane.

At the time of Doane's arrest, Owen said it was the first time he was aware that anyone had been arrested on this charge in Hampstead.

County Attorney James Reams has said the case could be a first for Rockingham County as well but that such charges are being tried more and more around the country.

On Sunday, a Billerica, Mass., man and his pregnant girlfriend, who lives in Concord, were arrested on similar charges in Lawrence, Mass., after a witness walked by their car and saw the man injecting his girlfriend with heroin as her toddler daughter sat in the back seat, police said.
