DERRY — Police are investigating two burglaries that occurred Tuesday night when the residents were home.
One resident had a close encounter with a suspected burglar at 76 E. Broadway at about 9:30 Tuesday night, according to police.
An “elderly” female told police she confronted a strange man who came out of her bedroom, flashlight in hand, Capt. Vern Thomas said.
She asked the man what he was doing in her home and he took off.
The woman described the man as about 6 feet 2 inches tall with a thin build, police said. He was wearing “military-looking clothing,” police said.
Derry police and a New Hampshire State Police K-9 searched the area, but didn’t find the suspect.
The man forced his way into the home through a window, police said. It didn’t appear that anything had been stolen.
Yesterday morning, police were called to 29 Birch St., not far from the E. Broadway address. The residents there reported they had been burglarized Tuesday evening, possibly around 8 p.m.
They told police they heard a noise from their kitchen the previous evening, but dismissed it. Yesterday morning, they discovered a wallet, pocketbook and electronic tablet were missing.
They told police they believe someone entered their home through an unlocked door, took the items and fled, Thomas said.
He said the two incidents could well be connected, given they both occurred Tuesday evening and the addresses are fairly close together.
His advice to residents was the same as always, he said, keep doors and windows locked and report suspicious activity.
Anyone with any information about either incident is asked to call police at 432-6111.
