Windham Community Bands kick off season

WINDHAM — The Windham Community Bands have announced the concert schedule for their 2014 summer season.

The public is invited to enjoy these free, outdoor concerts of entertaining music for all ages. The Windham Concert Band kicks off its schedule Saturday from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at Windham Town Day at Griffin Park.

The band’s schedule for the rest of the summer is: Saturday, July 5, 7:30 to 10 p.m., Fun on the 4th, Shriners Auditorium, Wilmington, Mass., Tuesday, July 8, 7 to 9 p.m., Summer Fun 2014, Greeley Park, Nashua; Sunday, July 13, 2 to 4 p.m. , Winnekenni Castle, Haverhill, Mass.; Sunday, July 20, 6 to 7:30 p.m., Searles School and Chapel (with sundaes), Windham; Saturday, July 26, 7 to 9 p.m., Cate Park bandstand, Wolfeboro; Saturday, Aug. 9, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sandown parade, Sandown.

The Windham Swing Band has a full schedule, too, including: Tuesday, July 15, 6 to 8 p.m., Meeting House Park, Hampstead; Wednesday, July 16, 6 to 8 p.m., Lynnfield Concerts on the Common, Lynnfield, Mass.; Saturday, July 19, 7 to 9 p.m., Ellis Park gazebo, York Beach, Maine; Thursday, July 24, 6 to 7 p.m., Bedford Village Commons, Bedford; Tuesday, July 29, 7 to 9 p.m.; Summer Fun, Greeley Park, Nashua; Wednesday, Aug. 13, 6:30 to 8 p.m., Old Home Days, Londonderry Common.

Band members are talented volunteer musicians ranging in age from high school to retirees. They come from Windham and many other area communities, from Nashua to Hampstead, Manchester to Methuen.

The Concert Band’s new director this year is professional trumpeter, conductor and teacher Dr. Spencer Aston. The new assistant director, also a talented trumpeter and teacher, is Windham resident Rob Scagnelli.

The Swing Band continues under the expert direction of professional reedman Rob Daisy and drummer/teacher Rob Fogg. The Flute Ensemble is directed by David Howard.
