Longtime Plaistow police chief dies

PLAISTOW — The town is mourning the death this afternoon of longtime police Chief Stephen Savage.

Savage, 68, lost his three-year battle with kidney cancer today, according to Town Manager Sean Fitzgerald.

"We are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of our friend and police chief," Fitzgerald said. "Stephen Savage dedicated his life to public safety and his work made a great impact on the town of Plaistow."

Savage was the second-longest serving police chief in New Hampshire, Fitzgerald said.

He was Plaistow's chief for 28 years after serving as chief in Haverhill, N.H., for 10 years, Fitzgerald said.

The police department's tactical training center was dedicated in Savage's honor June 26.

Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
