---- — LONDONDERRY — A Derry woman faces animal cruelty charges for leaving two dogs in a pickup Friday afternoon when it was 95 degrees outside, police said.

Kristina Gaines, 48, of 3 McKinley Ave. was arrested Wednesday night after turning herself in on a warrant, according to Londonderry police Lt. Timothy Jones.

Gaines left the two dogs — one believed to be a pit bull mix and the other a cocker spaniel mix — in the pickup for about 20 minutes while shopping at Market Basket shortly before 4 p.m., Jones said.

A passer-by spotted the two dogs and became concerned, he said.

“The dogs were lethargic and were panting very heavily,” Jones said. “The windows were closed and there was no ventilation.”

When Officer Timothy Moran arrived, Gaines was returning to her car with groceries.

“She said she was only gone for a few minutes,” Jones said.

Gaines was allowed to leave with the two dogs, which appeared to be recovering from the heat once they received some ventilation, he said.

Moran checked the supermarket’s surveillance cameras and found Gaines was in the store for much longer than she claimed, Jones said.

Gaines was arrested on two animal cruelty counts, misdemeanors each punishable by up to a year in the county jail.

She was released on $2,500 personal recognizance bail and is to be arraigned Aug. 12 in 10th Circuit Court in Derry.
