Show chorus wants more women to join

DERRY — Calling all women who love to sing.

The Rhythm of New Hampshire Show Chorus is once again offering four weeks of summer singing enjoyment as it presents its SINGsation program, beginning tomorrow.

The program runs every Thursday until Aug. 8 and is held from 6:45 to 8:30 p.m. at the Marion Gerrish Community Center, 39 West Broadway.

The free session is for any woman who loves to sing and would like to find out more about the all-female, barbershop-style a cappella group. No vocal experience is required and all voice parts are welcome.

During the SINGsation session, singers will learn three new songs and wrap up the program by singing at a NH Fisher Cats baseball game.

“If you’ve thought about singing, like to sing in your car or have been a member of other vocal groups and want to try something new this workshop is for you,” chorus director Jessie Oslan said. “Any woman of average singing ability can find a part that fits her voice range.”

Oslan said the summer session will be fun and women of all ages are welcome.

The chorus is working to change the face of a cappella music by adding some contemporary arrangements that also incorporate vocal percussion.

Assistant director Renee Fellows said the chorus traditionally sings a combination of blues, jazz, Broadway and other styles, but will add upbeat versions of popular songs made famous by the Black Eyed Peas and Katy Perry.

The group also presents a full-staged show every year. This year, “Sound WAVES” will take the Derry Opera House stage in November.

Rhythm of New Hampshire Show Chorus is a chapter of the famed Sweet Adelines International, an a cappella harmony organization for women with more than 27,000 members around the world.
