---- — SALEM, N.H. — A woman and a young child escaped serious injury yesterday when their car swerved out of control on Interstate 93 south, crossed the highway and slammed into a guardrail.

The unidentified woman was taken to a Massachusetts hospital for treatment of minor injuries, according to Salem fire Capt. Stephane Cattin. The child, strapped in a car seat in the back, was not hurt, he said.

The accident occurred at about 2 p.m. when the woman suddenly lost control of the Pontiac Grand Am, crossing the three-lane highway and hitting the guardrail, Cattin said.

“The guardrail was seriously damaged, but prevented her from going down the embankment,” he said.

Otherwise, the vehicle would have plummeted approximately 40 feet, Cattin said.

The woman had to be extricated, he said. Two lanes of the highway were closed for brief period.

No details on the crash were available yesterday afternoon from New Hampshire State Police.
