Boosters want to point the way to Windham High

WINDHAM — The Booster Club wants to point the way to Windham High School.

Town officials are supporting the club’s idea for an electronic message board on town land next to the intersection of Route 111 and London Bridge Road.

It would display messages about games and events at the school, as well as help people find the 4-year-old school.

The club will pay for the two-sided, 3-by-7-foot sign — estimated to cost as much as $45,000 — through donations.

“We desperately need a sign at least saying Windham High School is there,” club member Robin Cino told selectmen.

Opposing teams and others don’t know how to get to the school and GPS systems bring travelers in a different way from Route 111, she said.

The school is located at 64 London Bridge Road, about a two-minute drive from Route 111.

A formal plan is expected to get a review over the summer.

The School Board would bring the plan before selectmen, once it has been reviewed and accepted the Booster Club’s donation proposal.

“The sign could be operational for the next school year,” booster member Don Bielinski said.

Emergency police and fire notices could be posted on the message board, which will not display ads or political messages.

Officials are still reviewing whether the sign will be town or school district property.

Depending on the final plan, voters may be asked to give their approval at Town Meeting in March.
