DERRY — A 15-year-old girl was taken to the hospital after she collided with a car while riding her bicycle yesterday afternoon on Westview Drive.
Fire Battalion Chief Michael Doyle said the girl was taken to Parkland Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. Doyle said he could not identify the girl or the driver of the car.
Donna Levesque of 38 Kilrea Road was sitting on her front lawn just before 4 p.m. when she saw the crash happen. Levesque said the girl was riding on Westview Drive when she collided with a car traveling west on Kilrea Road.
“It was scary because you could see it happening,” Levesque said. “It was really just a freaky accident.”
Levesque said the girl was riding with a friend and both girls were wearing helmets. She said the car was being driven by a woman, who did not appear to be speeding.
“The woman got out of the car right away and was really upset,” Levesque said.
She said the girl was thrown from her bike and appeared to suffer injuries to her knee.
“She damaged it pretty good,” she said. “I think she’ll need a cast. It looked like her knee was indented in.”
Levesque said both girls’ mothers came to the scene shortly after and told them how dangerous the road was.
“They told me it was the first time they’ve rode on Kilrea and the last time they will ride on Kilrea,” she said.
Levesque said both girls live in the neighborhood.
