Injured Newton cyclist recovering from crash

NEWTON — A local bicyclist is recovering in a Boston hospital following an accident Tuesday afternoon.

Eric Lawson, 23, of Newton was in good condition yesterday at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Lawson received a severe head injury after crashing his bicycle on Crane Crossing Road, near Willow Grove trailer park, shortly before 5 p.m. Tuesday, police Officer Robert DiFlumeri said.

Lawson lost control of the bicycle while looking at his cellphone, falling to the pavement and slamming his head, DiFlumeri said.

A Willow Grove resident heard the crash, saw Lawson lying on the ground and called 911, he said. Trinity Ambulance rushed the injured man to a waiting helicopter, which flew him to Beth Israel, DiFlumeri said.

It was believed Lawson fractured his skull, DiFlumeri said. No further details on his injuries were available yesterday.
