Plaistow townwide yard sale is tomorrow

PLAISTOW — The recreation department is sponsoring the townwide yard tomorrow, rain or shine, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Forty spots around town will take part in the event, including seven along Main Street, and two each on Forrest Street, Kingston Road, Smith Corner Road and Tuxbury Road.

Maps of all properties participating are available at three locations: Town Hall, 145 Main St.; Plaistow Public Library, 85 Main St.; and the police department, 27 Elm St. The map can also be downloaded from the town website, plaistow.com.

Salem salvage yard still open

SALEM — A longtime salvage yard is being allowed to remain open while its owner challenges a decision by selectmen not to renew its operating permit.

Town Manager Keith Hickey said Michael McClellan, owner of Rocco’s Used Auto Parts at 55 Park Ave., can continue to operate the business pending an appeal of selectmen’s decision to deny renewal of the permit Monday night.

Hickey said the business would have to close if an appeal is unsuccessful. McClellan said he plans to challenge the board’s decision.

Selectmen opted not to renew the one-year permit in the wake of complaints by neighbors that the business was noisy and created excessive traffic both day and night.

McClellan said he’s operated Rocco’s for 10 years and that a salvage yard has operated at the site since 1967.
