Knights won't offer Christmas dinner this year

SALEM — After serving a free Christmas Day dinner for the past two years, Knights of Columbus Council 4442 announced the holiday meal won’t be held this year.

Knight Kenneth Ackerley said the decision to skip this year’s dinner was a tough one.

“It weighed heavy on our hearts,” Ackerley said. “Logistically, we just couldn’t pull it off.”

But Ackerley said his hopes are “definitely” high for dinner next year.

“Due to extenuating circumstances, we reluctantly made this decision,” the Knights said in a prepared statement.

The Knights served Christmas dinner to 65 people in 2011, Ackerley said.

The Knights hope to serve more in 2013, when they plan to offer another free holiday meal to anyone who is alone or simply wants to share good food and company.
