LONDONDERRY — An erratic driver may have caused a three-car crash yesterday afternoon on Mammoth Road, which sent a teenage girl to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
The female driver was transported to Parkland Medical Center in Derry with neck and back injuries, police said, but they would not identify her. A man was trapped in a white Chevrolet, but was soon extricated and did not suffer any injuries.
The crash caused Mammoth Road to be closed between Old Coach Road and South Road for about half an hour.
Police said they received a call reporting an erratic driver on Mammoth Road at around 3 p.m. yesterday. While police were responding to the call, the driver, who was heading north, clipped a car heading south and the accident resulted.
Londonderry fire Battalion Chief James Rodger said the crash could have been much worse.
“They just kind of glanced each other,” he said. “If it would have been a head-on crash, it would have been a lot worse. “
Rodger said it was fortunate everyone involved in the crash was wearing seatbelts. He also lauded emergency personnel for their quick response.
Londonderry police Lt. Adam Dyer said the crash remains under investigation.
