PELHAM — Police evacuated families from four Tallant Road homes yesterday after a construction worker backed a vehicle over a propane tank, causing it to rupture and leak.
Pelham firefighters plugged the tank's hole and poured water over it, Pelham police Sgt. Anne Perriello said.
No one was injured at the unoccupied duplex under construction at 42 Tallant Road, she said.
Perriello said it appeared the tank was underground and the worker had backed over a valve, opening a 1- to 2-inch hole in the tank.
Police were first on the scene about 4 p.m. The smell of propane was so strong they evacuated the nearby homes, Perriello said.
Police closed Tallant Road from the Mammoth Road intersection to the Simpson Road intersection, she said. It remained closed as of 6 p.m.
Derry and Windham firefighters responded. Dracut and Salem firefighters provided station coverage for Pelham.
