PLAISTOW — With winter on the horizon, Timberlane High School’s ski team is looking for skiers to swap out their gear for the good of the team.
The TRHS Ski Team Boosters will hold its annual Ski and Snowboard Swap at Timberlane Regional Middle School on Saturday, Nov. 17, from 8 a.m. to noon.
The event allows skiers and snowboarders to sell equipment and buy new gear, Boosters coordinator Dianne Healey said.
Money from each sale — 20 percent of consignment sales and 25 percent of vendor sales — goes to the TRHS Ski Team, Healey said.
The event has been held since as far back as 1996 and has increased in popularity every year, according to Healey.
“It’s almost like Filene’s Basement when there’s a bridal sale,” she said. “There’s a mass herd waiting outside the school, and they rush in to shop for equipment.”
The event provides families with children growing out of their equipment an opportunity to sell it to someone else who can use it or an opportunity to trade up from one set of skis to another.
“All they do is name their price, they get tagged with a sticker, we get 20 percent of the proceeds, and they get the rest of the sale,” Healey said.
Prices generally range from $5 to $125 for consigned equipment, while vendor-sold items generally sell for $25 or more, she said.
Those looking to sell equipment can drop it off at the middle school the night before the event from 6 to 8 p.m. Name the price and pick up the profits or the unsold equipment after the doors close Saturday.
Last year, the event raised around $4,000 for the ski team, Healey said. The money goes toward race bibs, warmup jackets and anything else the high school isn’t able to cover.
“We’re not allowed to buy uniforms for the team, but we can subsidize other stuff,” Healey said.
