Timberlane school board member arrested

SANDOWN — Timberlane School Board member Roger Barczak was arrested early Saturday morning and charged with assaulting his wife, according to police.

Timberlane School Board Chairman Rob Collins said Barczak resigned from the board Monday.

Hampstead police Lt. John Frazier said Hampstead police were asked to cover a 911 hang-up call in Sandown at 3:22 a.m. Saturday, coming from Barczak’s house on Main Street. Hampstead police were then called to come to the Sandown police station to meet with a woman who said she had been assaulted by her husband.

Frazier said the woman told them Barczak had “knowingly caused unprivileged physical contact by grabbing her on the neck and shoulders.” Barczak smashed her cell phone with a hammer and held her against her will at the home, police said.

Frazier said the woman was visibly upset and police made observations consistent with her being assaulted.

Officers went to Barczak’s house, but were unable to locate him. A 12-hour stop/arrest domestic violence order was issued against him.

Barczak was eventually reached by phone and turned himself in to Hampstead police at 9:40 a.m.

He was charged with simple assault, criminal mischief and false imprisonment. He was released on $3,000 personal recognizance and told not to have no contact with his wife until 3 p.m. Monday.

“I’m working through some personal family issues right now,” Barczak said yesterday. “I feel that stepping down from the School Board is only appropriate”

Collins said Barczak emailed his resignation Monday. But Collins said he wasn’t aware Barczak had been arrested.

“He said it was for personal reasons,” Collins said. “I wasn’t expecting it. I hadn’t gotten any further explanation. I wished him well and just hoped everything was OK with him.”

Barczak had served on the School Board since 2012. He was previously a selectman in Sandown.

He is scheduled to be arraigned in 10th Circuit Court in Derry at 12:30 p.m. Dec. 18.
