N.H. CCD students reach out to others

LONDONDERRY — For nine days, 235 children from Hudson, Londonderry and Windham came to St. Mark the Evangelist Parish in Londonderry to learn more about their Roman Catholic faith and becoming real super heroes by living in love to God and neighbor just like Jesus did.

Guest speaker and Keene State student Allie Bedell became a current day super hero to the children after she spoke to them about her traveling service projects to benefit those less fortunate in New Orleans and Bosnia, as well as the 48-Hour Homeless Challenge she took in Washington, D.C.

Inspired by her super actions and encouragement of CCD teachers, students were asked to earn money by doing extra chores or using their allowances to support 16 service projects as well as the “Christmas in July” collection of nonperishable foods for area food pantries and become super heroes themselves for others.

The Most Rev. Peter Anthony Libasci, Bishop of Manchester, celebrated the closing Mass of the Summer CCD Program with the children, Confirmation students, parents, teachers, volunteers, staff and parish members filling the church with laughter, music and prayer.

During the Offertory, the Rev. Pennett, pastor of St. Mark’s, and Deacon Lee Abbott accepted the abundant items the children proudly offered for the needs of others.

Their super-hero efforts will make an impact on the following outreach programs. In Grade 2, Nora Lane, Susan Lane and Gabby Berry’s class of 15 students held a Drink/Bake Sale and raised $140 for the Boston Children’s Hospital.

Sarah Poirier and Kayla Vantage’s class of 15 students collected items for the Anne-Marie House in Hudson, which supports the critical needs of children and families experiencing homelessness.

In Grade 3, Zach Capobianco and Hayley Peters’s class of 16 students, along with Carey Follansbee and Hayley Follansbee’s class of 19 students held a Bake Sale /Popsicle Sale and raised $201 for the American Red Cross.
