Salem man is suspect in hit-and-run

SALEM — Methuen, Mass., police are expected to charge a local motorist with hitting a bicyclist and fleeing Saturday on a road that straddles the state line.

Salem police responded to an area near 18 Hampshire Road about 4:18 p.m. following a report of a hit-and-run accident in which the driver of a green Toyota RAV4 fled before police arrived.

The bicyclist had minor injuries.

About 20 minutes later, a Salem dispatcher received several 911 calls from 26 Granite Ave. The caller kept hanging up, police said.

Salem police officers found George Hadley, 44, at his home extremely intoxicated and telling police he had just struck a bicyclist and left the scene, police said. His vehicle, the Toyota RAV4, fit the description given by the bicyclist and there was damage to the passenger side of the vehicle, police said.

Salem police said the crash actually occurred in Massachusetts and Methuen police would be drawing up arrest warrants for Hadley. Methuen police impounded Hadley's vehicle Saturday afternoon.

Methuen police said yesterday an officer is investigating the case and they could provide no further details.
