Elks host Thanksgiving meal Sunday

HAVERHILL — The Haverhill Lodge of Elks will host a free Thanksgiving meal for veterans and those in need on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Ladies group has holiday bake sale

HAVERHILL — The Ladies Philoptochos Society Elpis of Holy Apostles Sts. Peter and Paul Church will have its annual holiday bake sale Dec. 23.

People wishing to preorder Greek pastries and tsourekia are asked to contact Valerie Gounaris at 978-478-7991 or val926@comcast.net. Available items include: Tsourekia (sweet bread) at $7 each, baklava at $3 each, kourambiedes (white powdered cookies) at $1 each, finikia (walnut cookies) at $ each, and koulourakia (braided cookies) at $3 for a bag of six and $6 for a bag of 12.

The ordering deadline is Dec. 1. Prepayments can be made by cash or a check payable to Ladies Philoptochos Society Elpis. Pickup dates are Dec. 22 and 23 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Greek Orthodox Church, 154 Winter St.. Proceeds will go to various charities, including the Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund, the American Heart and Cancer societies, and a variety of social services.

The Ladies Philoptochos Society Elpis is as non-profit organization.

Salvation Army accepts applications for Christmas help

HAVERHILL — The Salvation Army will accept applications for 2012 Christmas assistance for residents of Groveland, Bradford and Haverhill.

Applications will be taken Dec. 4 through Dec. 6 from 1 to 6 p.m. Applicants must bring valid identifications for all adults in the household, birth certificates for all children, proof of 30 consecutive days of income, and proof of residence. Applications will be accepted at The Salvation Army, 395 Main St. More information is available by calling 978-374-7571.

Elmo to visit Haverhill library

HAVERHILL — The public library will host a visit from Elmo Nov. 30, at 11 a.m. Children will participate in a story time, and can act out books with their favorite Sesame Street character. More information is available from Sherri Galego at 617-680-5496.
