---- — ATKINSON — More than $1,000 of jewelry was stolen from a Sleepy Hollow Road home Monday night in what police said is the latest in a rash of burglaries in the region.

The homeowner was not home when the burglary occurred, but called police Tuesday morning to report jewelry was missing.

Police determined the thief had entered the house through a broken panel in the garage door, which had been sealed with cardboard.

Sgt. Patrick Caggiano said jewelry has been the primary target of recent break-ins.

“We’ve seen jewelry taken more lately, as opposed to televisions or other items,” Caggiano said. “It’s been indicative of the whole area because of the high price of metals.”

Last month, Atkinson police arrested Teddy Willette, 32, of Sandown after a series of copper thefts in several communities. Willette broke into vacant homes that were for sale or in foreclosure and stripped them of their copper piping.

Willette originally faced two Class B felony charges of driving with a suspended license while a habitual offender. Police later charged him hwith a single count of burglary in connection with the copper thefts.

Caggiano said it’s likely the motive for the theft Monday is similar to that in copper thefts.

“Usually there is a correlation to chemical dependency,” he said. “People are usually selling these metals at high prices in order to buy drugs.”

Police do not have a suspect in the burglary.

Caggiano advised residents to keep their eyes open for any unusual activity and to keep their doors locked.
