Windham welcomes new town planner

WINDHAM — The town's new planner comes all the way from Sheridan, Wyo., where she worked for a year as an assistant town planner.

Elizabeth Wood, 29, was chosen from among more than 30 applicants. She will earn a $49,800 base salary, plus benefits.

Her responsibilities will include reviewing plans, code enforcement and assisting the Planning Board with site review cases, according to Laura Scott, the town's community development director.

Wood also will field planning questions from the public.

Turner has been working as both community development director and planner since she was hired in March.

Town Administrator Dave Sullivan said hiring Wood will free up Scott to focus her attention on economic development.

Wood not only has planning expertise, but also good social skills, he said.

"She has good public relations skills, and I think she'll fit in well with the staff," Sullivan said.

Wood has experience working as a congressional intern in Washington, D.C. She is also an athlete, an ultra runner. For 15 years, she has run the JFK 50-mile race in Maryland. She also has run 100-mile races.

Sullivan and Scott recommended Wood to selectmen, who hired her.

Selectman Bruce Breton, the board's vice chairman, also interviewed Wood.

"She has a lot of energy and is articulate," Breton said.

Wood, who has roots in New England, grew up in Maryland.

She has a bachelor's degree from Salisbury University in Salisbury, Md., and a master's degree from the University of Wyoming.

She also was an assistant professor of geography at the University of Wyoming.

Selectmen will introduce her to the public at their meeting tomorrow night.
