PELHAM — A 10-year-old boy was killed when he was hit by a falling tree while trick-or-treating last night.
Pelham police said they were called to Fineview Circle at 6:36 p.m. for a report of a boy who had been struck by a tree. According to WMUR-TV, the windy weather caused a birch tree to snap off about 4 feet from its base and fall on the boy, who was out trick-or-treating with other children.
The boy, whose name has not been released, was transported by the Pelham Fire Department to Saints Memorial Hospital in Lowell, where he was pronounced dead.
No one else was hit by the tree, according to police.
"It's quite a tragedy," a Pelham police dispatcher said last night. He said the incident remains under investigation, and referred all further questions to Lt. Gary Fisher, who was not immediately available.
Pelham had trick-or-treating from 5 to 8 p.m. It was one of many Southern New Hampshire towns that held trick-or-treating hours last night.
The weather was extremely windy throughout the region last night, with gusts as high as 40 miles per hour at times, according to the National Weather Service.
