Veterans to be honored in Derry

DERRY — Birch Heights will honor veterans on Wednesday, Nov. 11, starting at 10 a.m. with a seminar about a program for veterans and their widows.

Londonderry police Detective Patrick Cheetham will play the bagpipes from noon to 12:30 p.m. A buffet luncheon begins at 12:30 p.m. It's free to all veterans, $10 for others.

The seminar will be repeated from 2 to 3 p.m. A memorial service will be from 7 to 8 p.m. in the chapel.

Historical society meets in Atkinson

ATKINSON — The Atkinson Historical Society is hosting its annual meeting on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 2 p.m. at Kimball Museum.

New officers will be elected and refreshments will be served after the business meeting. All are welcome to attend.

Blood drive slated in Londonderry

LONDONDERRY — The American Red Cross will host a blood drive Tuesday, Nov. 10, at Londonderry Lions Hall, 259 Mammoth Road.

Have a whale of a time in Londonderry

LONDONDERRY — Leach Library will host a talk on Thursday, Nov. 12, titled "The Golden Age of New England Whaling," given by historian Mike McKinley.

The lecture, which begins at 7 p.m., will focus on the history of the whaling industry in the 19th century, including the types of whales pursued, descriptions of whaling ships and their crews, and the ordeals of whale attacks and mutinies at sea.

McKinley earned his bachelor's degree in history and liberal arts from Plymouth State College, and went on to obtain his master's degree in history from the University of Idaho. He has been employed by the National Park Service as a seasonal park ranger and historical interpreter at various historic sites and monuments. He also presents lectures for libraries, historical societies and schools.

The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Londonderry Leach Library. It is free and open to the public, and will be in the library's lower-level meeting room. Light refreshments will be served.

Donate blood in Salem

SALEM — An American Red Cross blood drive will be Thursday, Nov. 19, at the Knights of Columbus hall, 37 Main St.

The blood drive, from 1 to 7 p.m., is sponsored by Knights of Columbus Council 4442. All blood types are needed.

Vienna Boys Choir offers holiday concert

PLAISTOW— The Vienna Boys Choir will perform Tuesday, Dec. 15, at 7 p.m. at the Timberlane Performing Arts Center. This is the group's only New Hampshire appearance.

Founded more than 500 years ago, the choir has long been Austria's musical ambassador.

The performance will feature a selection of classical and popular holiday music.

Tickets are $30, $35 and $40.
